OBD reading
OBD access can be efficient because the control unit remains installed and the tool manages the supported diagnostic session. Depending on protocol, the result may be a real read or a server-supplied virtual original matched to an identification. Stable voltage, a supported software version and an uninterrupted connection remain essential. Record whether the tool performed identification, read, unlock or patch steps.

Bench access
Bench mode communicates with a removed control unit through its external connectors. It may expose areas unavailable over OBD while avoiding opening the housing. It still requires the exact pinout, appropriate current-limited power supply, correct tool protocol and electrostatic care. Follow only the equipment manufacturer’s current documentation for the exact hardware revision.

Boot access
Boot mode normally requires opening the control unit and placing the processor in a specific start-up state. It can provide broad access or recovery options, but carries additional sealing, handling and connection risk. Use it only with suitable equipment, training and verified instructions. A generic web pinout should never override the tool vendor’s data for the identified board.

Virtual reads and matching
A virtual read is not a physical extraction of every byte currently stored in the control unit. It is typically a matched original obtained from an identification. This can be valid for supported workflows, but the file service must know it is virtual and must receive the complete identification. If previous unknown modifications are suspected, discuss the suitable recovery or full-read path first.

A method-selection checklist
Confirm the exact ECU or TCU, vehicle voltage requirements, protocol status and tool subscription. Read tool notices about unlocks, counters and recovery. Save identification screenshots, back up the original, label every file and avoid experimenting on a customer vehicle. When uncertain, send the identification before connecting or opening the unit.
